Your baby is growing up, and so are their teeth! According to the American Dental Association most babies develop their first tooth around 6 months of age. After that first eruption your baby should have a full set of primary teeth within three years. Although it is usually pretty easy to spot teething, the team at Auburn Dental Group created this helpful list of some common signs of teething.

If your baby exhibits any of these signs coupled with irritability and excessive drooling, then it’s time to get out your teething tools! Even ask your local dentist or doctor about options for helping your growing toddler.

1. Decreased Sleeping

Is your little one not falling asleep as easily as they used to? If so, teething could be the problem. As baby teeth begin to emerge your child will experience pain, unsurprisingly, this makes it more difficult for them to fall and stay asleep. Teething toddlers tend to wake up more often due to the constant discomfort they feel.

2.Excessive Biting or Gnawing

If your tiny tyke can’t seem to keep things out of their mouth, then they could be developing teeth. Babies will bite and gnaw on things to help relieve the pressure from their gums and alleviate pain. Instead of hiding every toy, try using a teething ring to keep your toddler happy.

3.Rubbing of the Ear or Cheek Area

If your child is pulling at their ear or rubbing their cheeks, it could mean a couple of different things. While these are both signs of an ear infection, these unusual habits could be indicative of teething. When teeth erupt they cause pain that can spread across the cheeks and to the ears. If this happens, a trip to the doctor may be needed to rule out an ear infection.

4.Loss of Appetite

A child will experience sore and tender gums while teething; the pain felt from chewing will typically make them refuse food. If your toddler is refusing foods during the teething process, try finding soft nutrient-rich foods that your child won’t have to chew to eat.

Be sure to take good care of your child’s mouth and gums even before the eruption of the first tooth. After teeth begin to develop, it’s time to schedule an appointment with Auburn Dental Group to ensure that your child’s mouth is healthy and their teeth are strong!
