The Best Way to Clean Dentures

Posted on: December 2nd, 2019 | Categories: Uncategorized

Dentures can help restore a smile, but for new users, can also present plenty of challenges, everything from getting used to the fit in your mouth, to the way it feels when you chew, to care and upkeep can feel foreign. We’ve put together some tips and tricks on proper daily cleaning of your dentures, plus advice on keeping them pearly white!

  • First, you will want to rinse your dentures before brushing. Rinsing off your dentures before brushing allows for any loose food to be removed, making the rest of the cleaning process easier.
  • Second, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean all of the surfaces of your dentures. Make sure to use a non-abrasive cleanser on your dentures to make sure that they do not get scratched.
  • Make sure to also clean your and brush your mouth well to avoid irritation and bad breath. Brush your gums, cheeks, tongue, and the roof of your mouth to avoid any plaque buildup.
  • When not wearing your dentures, make sure to keep them in water to prevent warping.

How to Whiten Yellowing/Brown Dentures

It’s important to remember that the color your dentures are when they’re brand new is the whitest they can be. Because dentures are made of synthetic material, they can’t be whitened in quite the same way natural teeth can be. However, there are things you can do to help your dentures maintain their color.

  • Don’t sleep with your dentures in. Those 6-8 hours you spend every night asleep create a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause your dentures to become discolored.
  • Try to limit dark colored foods and drinks like berries, coffee, black tea, or red wine. Using a straw for drinks can also help limit staining by shortening the amount of time your teeth are exposed to the dark liquids.
  • Periodically soak your dentures in equal parts water and white vinegar for about 30 minutes to loosen tartar and keep dentures white!

These simple tips to follow will help denture-wearers keep their dentures clean and keep their mouth healthy. If you have additional questions on dentures or how to care for them, the best thing you can do is contact your dentist!
