Flossing: Are You a Liar?

Are YOU Flossing?

When it comes to flossing, it turns out that a lot of us are liars. A recent survey found that more than a quarter of Americans admit to lying to our dentist about our flossing habits.

Everyone’s been there. Everyone has been in the chair, waiting for the doctor to come in while racking your brains, trying to determine when the last time you actually flossed was. If you come up blank, or simply don’t want to face the floss talk then 25% of people lie, and claim that to floss daily.

What many people don’t realize is that these lies can seriously affect our oral health. Every time you lie about your routine, you underestimate the importance of flossing in relation to gum health. A good floss helps to remove tartar and plaque from parts of your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. Tartar and plaque buildup are associated with periodontal disease and tooth decay.

Failing to floss can have some serious implications for your teeth, and overall oral health! Letting your dentist know you haven’t been flossing will help them know to look for the early warning signs of gum disease and tooth decay. Luckily, gum disease is treatable, but most treatable when caught early!

Remember: flossing is an important part of your morning routine. If you aren’t incorporating it into your dental habits, it might be time to start.

Next time you are in the dentist’s chair here at Auburn Dental Group, be honest about your oral health. Brushing only cleans three of the five surfaces of your teeth, so when your dentist reads you the riot act about not flossing regularly, you should probably listen.
